It was the curse of the “two Ashley’s” and England’s penalty curse that saw them lose to an Italian team that was very compact and strong on the night.
To many that have listened to the English press throughout the course of this tournament, we will agree that this elimination of England is good riddance to bad rubbish. The team has not been exceptional in the tournament, and they continued that form into this match, but their luck could only hold out for 120minutes, after which they were eliminated by the Italians after two misses from Chelsea Ashley Cole, and Manchester United Ashley Young.
The Italians will face Germany in the semi-finals in Warsaw on Thursday after England’s campaign came to a bitterly familiar end with their sixth defeat in a penalty shoot-out in seven attempts since 1990.
Italy clinched a 4-2 penalty shoot-out win after Ashley Young sent his spot-kick against the bar and Italy captain Gianluigi Buffon saved from Ashley Cole to seal England’s fate.
The other quarter final fixture will see Spain who beat France by two goals, and Portugal who beat greece by a lone Ronaldo goal.
